However, since it switched to Sundays at 9:30AM, there usually would only be 3-4 weeks off in a given year.

This was pretty standard for Prime Time anime on major networks (and still is for the few that do air anime during the day, minus TV Tokyo) in the past. One Piece would air anywhere from 29 to 42 (or so) episodes a year. Someday, we'll get a properly paced anime.but it won't be until after it ends.īasically, the reason why the pacing was fine in the past is because Fuji TV, when it aired in Prime Time, used to have constant pre-emptions and breaks. Hence they're constrained to a schedule of always producing a new episode. Who demand a new One Piece every week they can air it. It should be noted that this really isn't Toei's fault. There's still noticeable prolonging techniques like reaction shots, flashbacks, prolonging a gag, etc. The pacing has somewhat improved with Zou, but it can still get pretty bad. Even at a proper 23 minute runtime, a well-paced arc would be about 65 episodes. One Pace brought it down to 48, but they also cheated and made a bunch of episodes like 30 or 45 minutes long. The anime streeeeeetched it out and ended up lasting 118 episodes! Holy fuck. To give you an idea, Dressrosa was already a long as hell arc in the manga, ending after 102 chapters. The period from Fishman Island to Dressrosa is when the pacing was at its worse. Starting out it's not so bad, but around Thriller Bark is when the pacing took a huge hit.
